OUR WORK: Clyde River Steamer Club Magazine

For 8 years now, Love & Humphries has been designing and printing an annual magazine for Clyde River Steamer Club, which was originally formed back in 1932 for those interested in the passenger steamer fleets of the Clyde.

What Clyde River Steamer Club needed

The club needed Love & Humphries to, using historical and recent images and text supplied by the client, design, typeset and produce a glossy keepsake magazine which would be distributed to members and sold via their website.

How we helped

The most recent magazine we produced for Clyde River Steamer Club was the 2013 edition, issue no. 49, named ‘Life On Board’, and here, we look at how we helped our client…

Design & Typesetting

Love & Humphries Graphic Designer Marc explains the process of designing the Clyde River Steamer Club Magazine…

The client supplied us with around 90 images and full copy for the magazine. They wanted design and layout that would really make the most of the images that they supplied, as well as something that would be easy to read. We designed a magazine style layout back in 2005 when we first started working with the client, and each year we develop this layout based on the text and images that will feature in that particular edition.

Some of the images were hard-copies as they were archive images, so they needed scanned and worked on before being placed into the magazine. There was also a lot of text, so I was required to spend a bit of time making sure it didn’t cut awkwardly across pages, so that it would read properly – and also that the text corresponded correctly with the featured images.

The end result was a 52 page magazine, comprising of a mix of greyscale and full colour pages, which really showcases the vessels that once, and still do, grace our rivers.

Print & Finishing

Using lithography we printed 620 magazines on to high quality paper stock. All printing and finishing was done in house by Love & Humphries.

The cover was printed on a gloss coated paper, making great use of the stunning imagery and giving the magazine the  ‘glossy’ finish our client desired. The inside pages however, were printed on an uncoated, matt paper stock chosen by the client for it’s texture – and this worked perfectly with the black and white images used in the magazine.

Not only did this printing technique ensure a high quality  finish, but given that Love & Humphries use waterless ink, it was also more environmentally friendly too.

After printing, the magazine was folded, trimmed and stitched by us to ensure the perfect magazine finish.

What the client says…

Love & Humphries have been responsible for producing the CRSC magazine since 2005. The company have done a consistently excellent job, at an extremely competitive price. They apply their considerable flair to the magazine’s design and colour quality, and lavish care over its “finish”. They are a great collaborative team, always prepared to go the extra mile, and working with them is a pleasure.
